Slieve Donard

Rising to 2,789ft, Slieve Donard is the highest peak in Northern Ireland

Weather permitting the summit of Slieve Donard offers stunning views of Newcastle and Dundrum Bay, on the clearest days it is possible to see as far afield as Belfast to the North and Dublin to the south.

The ascent to the top is a relatively easy climb and access to the path is via Donard Park in Newcastle. The park itself offers forrest walks and a number of beautiful bridges over the glen river. Beyond the woodland you will find the Ice house, a 19th century Igloo shaped stone building used to store ice collected from the river during winter months. The path continues to follow the river from here up to the saddle where you will reach the Mourne wall which can then be followed to the summit of Slieve Donard or Slieve Commedagh to the west.
